How Reflexology Found Me

Ruth Holden

I was born in Baltimore, MD. There were five in our family, one sister older and one younger. Both of my parents were deaf. My sisters and I were hearing. We learned sign language first and through our formative years we communicated with each other by signing. We lived in East Baltimore where I attended Catholic and public schools. After graduation I worked in retail and then in accounting for 15 years. In 1968 I married Ron Holden. In the mid-eighties my parent's health needs became evident. I decided to change careers and became a licensed real estate agent specializing in bank foreclosures, knowing this would give me flexibility to care for my parents.

Over time the doctor visits multiplied and "juggling" became a way of life between my career, husband, home, and aging parents who were becoming more dependent. Being non-hearing in a hearing society was challenging for them and our medical system is limited in many aspects. These limitations became even more evident as I dealt with them personally for my parents. The Health Care System began to anger me and now I was faced with my own health faltering. Then I hit the wall — burnout, suffering with neck pain, frozen shoulder, constant fatigue, going to the doctors, physical therapy and taking medications that didn't alleviate symptoms. My doctor told me that I needed to give up something or I was going to snap.

At the same time, my parents' needs continually increased. There wasn't time for me to care for myself. At this time my parents' podiatrist came to the home. I liked this idea. It worked well for a few visits then my father fired him. I groaned, another job added. I began cutting their toe nails and applying lotion to their feet. Slowly a deep transformation began taking place. I felt great compassion for my parents. This was my "Aha" moment, a service done in compassion and love benefits everyone. Reflexology found me through these two people that I dearly loved and I thank them for giving me that gift.

My gradual transition from real estate to reflexology began in the late 1990's and continues to this day with continued education courses. Each session with a client is a learning experience. In 2003 I started my practice in my doctor's office. She wanted to add reflexology to the modalities she offered her patients. Some of my former real estate colleagues became my clients and I can empathize with their stresses.

In June of 2000 I traveled to England to take part in a two week intensive training course, using color/crystal light to add a special technique to a reflexology session. This technique became my main focus because it was most effective for results.

In January of 2011 I received a healing device that combines the power of color and Crystal Light Therapy known as the "Crystal Device." Another “Aha" moment for me. I have been practicing this same crystal light theory with reflexology session on hands and feet where clients now find their sessions are enhancing following with a crystal light therapy session. The device has seven extremely clear and highly polished quartz crystals suspended above the client lying on a massage table. Each of the quartz crystals has been cut to a specific frequency and is aligned above one of the seven chakras.

I am committed to focusing on all aspects of healing through foot and hand reflexology. My vision is to bring a realization to the public that hand and foot reflexology is not a luxury or just something that feels good, but an essential tool (or modality) that reduces stress and adds to one's overall well-being. Reflexology has been good to me and for me. It helped me come to a peaceful place in my life. I like to share what I love to do.
